Each word card has a coloured triangle (top, left). Pink indicates these words are using Phase 2 sounds. Purple indicates that these words use Phase 3 sounds. Red graphemes indicate that these sounds might be more tricky as different people can pronounce these sounds differently. E.g. the âerâ in the word âcrackerâ may be pronounced as an âuhâ or even an âaâ sound. Learners may need support with the red graphemes.
All images/words included in this resource have been chose because they can be sounded out - the âtickâ pictured on the coloured (pink/purple) triangle indicates that these words can be sounded out. These colour coded details are also included on the resource.

This countdown has been designed to be used for by an individual/group or class to countdown the days to Christmas. Behind each numbered flap is a Christmas image and a few related words to read. This resource has been designed to be made by or with an adult - an adult leading the way with the steps to follow and a learner reading and helping as they are able.

This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students with additional learning needs. An older, more able, pupil may be able to make this âwithâ or âforâ a younger learner in a paired activity, working together.
Resource Details
Everything needed for the finished Advent Candle Countdown Calendar is included on the pdf. There are six main instructions and additional, detailed, information positioned next to the relevant parts to make what to do clearer. The overall task is to cut along the red dotted lines to cut out the main candle shape and separate the âflapsâ which will fold over the image (for each day) to hide it.
Numbers are provided to stick onto these flaps in order - from the base of the candle up to the top. Alternatively these numbers can be written by hand instead - whatever is preferred/easiest.
To make one advent calendar learners will need:
a pencil (to write their name)
a pair of scissors
a glue stick
a small ball of Blue Tac (the size of a small marble)
The piece of Blue Tac will then be made into x24 teeny tiny balls which are used to secure the flaps closed until it is the date to be opened.
Suggestions
This pdf will need to be printed onto white card or it wonât be strong enough to stand up by itself.
Double sided sticky tape might be a better alternative to secure the candle shape together instead of using a glue stick. Glue/double-sided sticky tape is to be applied to the single purple strip, positioned vertically on the right hand side of the pdf.
Read the six steps carefully before starting to help make the process as easy as possible.

These letters have been designed to install and sense of awe and wonder - the letters look so beautiful when the sun shines through them and where the coloured letter shape âfallsâ depends on the position of the letters in relation to the sun which changes as the sunâs position changes. The set gives an opportunity to showcase the whole alphabet together to encourage learners to recognise and name each letter (and sound) and practise the order of the alphabet. The letters can of course be repositioned to create words and labels as you choose. The lowercase version of this resource is also available.
This resource would support work on shadows, light/dark and better understanding the shape of uppercase letters to support greater recognition.

These Christmas alphabet matching cards have been designed to be printed onto card to practise identifying the x26 initial Christmas-themed alphabet sounds. Learners match the initial sound for each image with the correct grapheme. A fun way for learners to practise their sound knowledge at Christmas.
This activity has been designed to be a simple, interactive, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning.
Whoâs it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as older students needing additional support with learning.
How to use it?
An adult prints these cards onto A4 card and and pre-cuts them into x52 separate rectangle cards.
The set of cards is shuffled and placed on a table top for learners to sort and match. Learners could use this resource on their own or with adult support. Learners could also use this resource to order the cards alphabetically.
Learners look at each image and say this out loud. They then identify (verbally) the initial sound of the word e.g. for the first letter of the alphabet the learner would say âAdvent Calendarâ and then âaâ (for âAdventâ). Learners then look for the âaâ grapheme card to match the two cards together.

This recourse includes x26 pictures - one (initial sound) for each letter of the alphabet and x26 matching grapheme cards - all Christmas themed. An extra ânâ for ânutcrackerâ is also included (so x27 pictures and letter cards). This set also includes an âAnswer sheetâ.
The pictures included use words with clear initial sounds. Some images/words may be completely new to learners making these a talking point and opportunity to extend their âChristmas vocabularyâ. For clarity all images are labelled on the right side of every grapheme card, e.g. âquinceâ may easily be presumed to be a âpearâ.
